Earlier this week, HISD announced the first concrete programs created under the Arts Access Initiative. The initiative, which is organized by the local nonprofit Young Audiences of Houston, focuses on creating opportunities for arts education in Houston’s public schools. In 2013-2014, the initiative conducted preliminary research in HISD K-8 schools.
Informed by this research, the Arts Access Initiative will open arts education pilot programs on eleven campuses in 2015-2016 – specifically, Atherton ES, Benbrook ES, Eliot ES, Hartsfield ES, Hines-Caldwell ES, Kashmere Gardens ES, Memorial ES, Mitchell ES, Scarborough ES, Whittier ES, and Hamilton MS. The new programs will encompass dance, theater arts, and visual arts and will go considerably beyond each campus’s current arts offerings.
