HISD’s annual Ivy Plus event – to be held at Reagan High School on Monday, October 6, from 5pm to 8pm – is a great opportunity for high school students to learn more about their prospective colleges.
The major highlight of Ivy Plus is a college expo featuring some of the nation’s best schools. For the duration of the evening, college representatives will be available to provide information about their respective institutions and answer questions from students and parents. Ivy League schools to be represented in the college expo include Harvard, Yale, Cornell, and the University of Pennsylvania. Other top-tier universities that will send representatives include Duke, Johns Hopkins, Washington University in St. Louis, Carleton, Pomona, Oberlin, Sarah Lawrence, and of course, Rice University.
Additionally, from 6pm to 8pm, parents and students will have the opportunity to participate in college admissions workshops. These workshops will focus not only on gaining entrance to selective universities, but also on winning scholarships and qualifying for financial aid.
College fairs like this one are a useful resource for seniors. While it is true that one can learn more about a school through a personal visit than through a college fair, many families find that it is not feasible to visit all – or even any – of a student’s prospective schools. When this is the case, expos like Ivy Plus are often the only chance parents and students will have to speak to admissions representatives and get valuable information about what a school looks for in its prospective students. If your child is considering applying to any of the universities represented at Ivy Plus, the event is a great opportunity.
