Over the next two weeks, HISD will hold community meetings (see schedule below) to discuss design concepts and progress for 5 district schools which are being rebuilt on new campuses. HSPVA, Condit Elementary School, Lee High School, and DeBakey High School are among the 40 HISD schools being upgraded with funds from the 2012 HISD bond. A fifth school, Energy Institute High School, has received alternative and private funding for the construction of its new facility.
DeBakey High School, a magnet for health professions and the 33rd-ranked high school in the nation, will be moving to a new facility in the Medical Center. Many details about the new facility’s designs have already been made public; further details may or may not be revealed in the meeting. HSPVA will also be moving to a new campus downtown, near Minute Maid Park.
DeBakey, HSPVA, Condit, and Lee were among the first schools to start the rebuilding process under the bond. The planning and design phase is complete for these schools, and construction is scheduled to begin by early 2015. For these schools, the upcoming community meetings will kick off the construction phase.
Energy Institute High School, one of HISD’s newest magnet programs, opened in 2013 at the site of the former Dodson Elementary. The rebuilding project for Energy Institute is still in the planning phase. This will be its first community meeting about the new facility.
