Finland has one of the top educational systems in the world. And now, it’s considering a major overhaul that administrators hope will make it even better. Teaching by subjects – a curriculum element so fundamental most of us take it for granted – is to be phased out and replaced with teaching by topics. For example, modern European culture and politics might be taught in a course encompassing elements of geography, economics, history, and even literature.
These curriculum reforms are already being implemented in high schools in the country’s capital of Helsinki. While there has been some pushback from teachers, Helsinki’s education and development administrators hope to see the new system implemented nationwide by 2020.
